Gangs of criminals have increasingly been using unregistered dirt bikes without number plates in a string of recent attacks in Sydney.

The series of attacks using dirt bikes without registration plates most recently resulted in the bashing of a petrol station worker during a robbery at Ingleburn in the city's south-west on Saturday.

The worker was bashed in the head with a crowbar up to 16 times as he tried to escape from the thieves, who later robbed the store of cigarettes and cash.

Dirt bikes are currently allowed to be unregistered in NSW as long as they are only used on private property, however many criminals are exploiting this law.

The bikes are fast and riders often wear full-face helmets and motorcycle gear that makes them hard to identify.

Police who discover dirt bikes on the road unregistered and without compulsory third-party insurance can fine the rider $2,000.
