Future research studies need to assess the number of underrepresented students who leave of STEM majors under baseline industrial book conditions, switch the curriculum to OER, then examine whether those drop-out rates decrease.


There are several constraints to today research study. First, our use of an initial, basic education class suggests that our sample was comprised mostly of first-year students (62.8%). While not naturally problematic, this does suggest that a few of our main dependent measures (e.g., prior behaviors associated with high textbook expenses) may not be particularly sensitive.


Nonetheless, the results demonstrated here might be even bigger than we had the ability to capture utilizing this sample of primarily first-year trainees. Future studies need to take a look at whether these results are indeed more pronounced in students who have actually had more time in the college environment. It is also true that impacts may be more pronounced in courses where the book expenses are even higher than the $100 for this course on our campus.
