For instance, books in fields such as engineering and physics cost even more than books in the humanities (Kopf, 2015). While our information can not directly speak with this problem, our results offer evidence that marginalized trainees are adversely impacted by high textbook expenses more often, including dropping out of, or avoiding entirely, certain classes.
That is, underrepresented students may leave of these majors at greater rates due to the high cost of textbooks in lots of STEM fields. Future research studies need to assess the number of underrepresented students who leave of STEM majors under baseline industrial book conditions, switch the curriculum to OER, then examine whether those drop-out rates decrease.
There are several constraints to today research study. First, our use of an initial, basic education class suggests that our sample was comprised mostly of first-year students (62.8%). While not naturally problematic, this does suggest that a few of our main dependent measures (e.g., prior behaviors associated with high textbook expenses) may not be particularly sensitive.
Nonetheless, the results demonstrated here might be even bigger than we had the ability to capture utilizing this sample of primarily first-year trainees. Future studies need to take a look at whether these results are indeed more pronounced in students who have actually had more time in the college environment. It is also true that impacts may be more pronounced in courses where the book expenses are even higher than the $100 for this course on our campus.
Even more, we were just able to consist of trainees who decided into our end-of-semester survey. As a result, there might be problems with self-selection of individuals, and we may have missed out on important segments of the student population. It is possible that students who are less likely to complete the study (i.e., those who are stopping working or otherwise uninspired) would have provided important information for our questions of interest.
In general, we discovered that students in Introductory Psychology performed equally-well when using OER compared to a traditional industrial book. Those using OER likewise rated the quality of the 2 books similarly and accessed them at comparable rates. Even more, we discovered that trainees who were first-generation or both first-generation and an ethnic minority reported participating in more habits and suffering more negative results, such as dropping classes or getting bad grades, since they could not afford the book.
