Although its advancement as a sport happened generally in northern Mexico, the United States, and western Canada, rodeo's appeal is global.

As the cowboys' profession was curtailed in scope by the railways and by the fences that marked the end of the Open Variety period, the contests ended up being routine official programs of entertainment. Numerous places declare the distinction of being the first location to hold a rodeo in the United Statesamong them Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1872 and Winfield, Kansas, in 1882but such early contests were merely exhibitions of riding and roping skills and not the extremely organized shows that modern rodeo became.
Prescott, Arizona Territory, held the very first yearly rodeo on July 4, 1888. Organized by a town committee, it consisted of public marketing, admission charges, and championship rewards, developing the place as a real competitive viewer sport.
