The Washington State Republican is seeking to keep a Republican Congress.
The House Speaker recently said Republicans could try to keep the House GOP. He cited that as an argument on the record but conceded the state GOP is the safest place GOP members could have an advantage.
He did note, however, that one of the biggest challenges facing Republicans is going to be the 2018 midterm elections: There is not a majority in this state that can take over.
Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Hastings, said this week that a majority would take over as the legislature is scheduled to begin next week.
"So if a majority does happen, they are going to be able to act in the house and go do their work at home," Stivers said Monday on The Mark.
Stivers said he and two other Republicans are concerned enough that they would like to make up for declining numbers with a plan to replace the House GOP with one with Republicans.
He said he was happy and optimistic about GOP leadership.
"They could do it," he told reporters Sunday. "But they're going to have to figure out a way to keep control in the House, and then take leadership and get us to that state where we need to go before we have to fight to fill vacancies."
Stivers said he wanted to see what the state Republicans were proposing, including a change in state law making it easier for party leaders to change state legislation in their districts.
