I personally hate the C word, and I'm not going to use it again. But I do whole heartedly believe that many of the chemicals used in growing our food is detrimental to our health. If nothing else home grown organic vegetables taste a million times better than most shop bought equivalents. There is nothing worse than a large healthy looking tomato that actually has no taste at all.

page1-85px-Transitant_cap_al_procom%C3%BYou will need some gravel or clay to support your plants. In aquaponic supplies the plants roots sit in water not soil so you need some gravel to support your plants. The water will run though the gravel and back into the fish tank.

Just in case the thought has crossed your mind. Yes, you can eat the fish. You have the best of both worlds. Fish and vegetables for your meal plate anytime you wish.

But before you get into building a home Aquaponics system in your organic garden you need to know the requirements. And don't worry, the requirements for home aquaponics are very little but important all the less. So what I am going to do today is just explain some of the home Aquaponic requirements that you will need to consider.

Hydroponics is a system in which water is used to grow produce. Aquaculture is a system in which aquatic organisms, typically fish, are grown. These systems are a little more entailed than what was just noted, but they are two statements to give you an idea about what is yet to come.

When water from a fish tank is given to plants, they grow amazingly well from all the organic fertilizer from the fish wastes. And plant also do an amazing job at filtering these wastes out of the water and keeping the water healthy for the fish. In a system where water is recirculated between a fish tank and plant grow beds, the fish feed the plants and the plants clean the water for the fish.

page1-85px-Transitant_cap_al_procom%C3%BLighting is probably the factor which will most significantly affect yields. Plants use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide into solid carbon for leaf and mass building, and the stronger the light, the faster that will happen. Going outdoors is a good choice if it is possible for you, otherwise your electricity bill may become a bit high due to the artificial lighting you have to provide.

The most important factors when it comes to choosing fish species are these: Nutrition, spawning, density in a container. Catfish are perfect for large containers, and they eat almost everything. Other good choices of fish are Carp, goldfish, jade perch and cod. In practice all the different species can work, but you may experience problems with some of them, especially when it comes to propagation and spawning. If that is not a concern, by all means get the cheapest fish you can find.

Be sure to use food grade plastic containers to store your fish in. Many plastics contain harmful chemicals that leach into the liquid over time. If you are planning to grow organic produce then you have to avoid this at all cost. These chemicals can also cause the fish to die.

You have a container that the fish are in, the water from that container, either by pump or gravity, flows through the roots of the suspended plants. The plants absorb the nutrients (which sounds much better than they consume the fish waste even though that's what they are doing) which cleans up the water.
