>Sir Ian came out as gay in 1988 during a BBC radio discussion about the Thatcher government's controversial Section 28 of the Local Government Act, which criminalised the "promotion of homosexuality"

>Two years later, he was knighted for services to the performing arts.

>In the 1990s, Sir Ian appeared in critically-acclaimed films including Six Degrees of Separation (1993) and Gods and Monsters (1998)

>The actor also played super-villain Magneto in the Marvel comic book movie X-Men (2000) and two of its sequels. As X-Men fans flocked to cinemas, Sir Ian was in New Zealand shooting his best known role

>Sir Ian has appeared six times as the wizard Gandalf in the blockbuster film adaptations of fantasy epics Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit

>He has since maintained a busy film and theatre schedule including Disney's 2017 live adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, and the 2019 films Cats and The Good Liar

>Sir Ian, who is a prominent LGBT rights campaigner, lives in London.
