I had expected a floating theme park, not the elegant liner that greeted me as I embarked on Disney's latest cruise ship, Fantasy.

The fourth in the Disney fleet, the Fantasy, which can carry 4,000 passengers, was christened in New York by singer Mariah Carey before its maiden voyage in March.

Chute for the stars: Disney's Fantasy liner will appeal to passengers across the generations

The only nod to Walt's work in Fantasy's Art Noveau-styled atrium is a bronze Minnie Mouse - but golden friezes featuring Disney characters line the balconies above.

In the Royal Court, one of three restaurants guests rotate through on the cruise, you'll see napkins folded like tiny princes' tuxedos and carriage-shaped bread baskets.

At first glance, Remy, the upmarket, French, adults-only restaurant, looks like many other ships' fine dining establishments with its wine cellar room, fancy banquettes and heavy woods. But on closer inspection the image of Remy, the character from Ratatouille, is cleverly carved into wooden chair-backs and worked into seat patterns.

Part of Fantasy's appeal also lies in the extensive adults-only areas, which include the airy Palo restaurant, the tranquil Senses Spa, complete with hot or cold aromatherapy showers and a couples' treatment villa, and the peaceful Quiet Cove Pool.

The popular Skyline Bar from sister liner Dreams is replicated on Fantasy, featuring eight rotating animated pictures of the world's most stunning skylines on its walls.

But unique to Fantasy is the adults-only entertainment district Europa. It's made up of La Piazza, a Venetian-themed bar with a giant carousel, the shamrock-adorned O'Gills Pub, a London-inspired nightclub The Tube, which features red phone boxes, and Oh La La - a wonderfully kitsch French boudoir champagne bar full of pouffes and chaise longues.

Age-specific kids' clubs make it possible to forget about children being on-board - even if they are your own.

Under-threes can be deposited in the It's A Small World nursery and three to ten-year-olds have the run of the Oceaneer Club - a mind-boggling space that includes Andy's Room, where kids are dwarfed by huge toys and the interactive Monster's Academy.

Disney also gets it right for difficult-to-please older children. Those aged 11 to 13 have Edge, a space full of computers, video karaoke, a gaming wall and dance-floor. The 14- to 17-year-olds have Vibe, where a teen-only swipe card gives access to an outdoor chill-out area, video pods, computers and a media room for gaming and TV, plus a nightclub for budding DJs. They also have their own 'Chill Spa' in Senses where they can enjoy speciallydesigned treatments.

Families can play games in the D Lounge, but as Fantasy will be sailing seven-night Caribbean itineraries there's also plenty of al fresco fun available.

Kids can guzzle poolside free soft drinks and ice cream, play mini-golf on Goofy's Sports Deck or ride the popular AquaDuck watercoaster, which winds around and outside the ship.

High-end productions are a big part of the cruise - from the on-deck fireworks of Pirates In The Caribbean to two new shows debuting in the Walt Disney Theatre.

But it's attention to small details, such as the virtual portholes that give an 'outside' view to inside cabins, that makes Fantasy really special.

Disney have created an elegant cruise ship that appeals to adults, teens and kids - and that truly is something magical.
