The 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, 150 and 210, frequently referred to as the 'Tri-Five,' are a staple of American classic automobile shows and clubs. Attend any regional car fulfill and it's likely you'll see a Tri-Five of some sort there, so for owners of these cars, it can be difficult to stand out.


The car, which was recently included on YouTube channel AutotopiaLA, turns a load of heads thanks to its matte black/gloss black exterior color combination, low-slung stance, shaved door deals with and, maybe most notably, the rumble of its 6.2 L LS3 V8 engine. AutotopiaLA spoke to the owner of the automobile, Matt, who offered some background on the construct.


After driving the car home, Matt instantly went to deal with the automobile, shaving the door handles, revamping the interior and replacing the 350 cubic-inch V8 engine (which he blew) with an LS3 crate engine bought from General Motors Performance. He also set up an air bag suspension and larger, black-painted wheels to offer the Chevy coupe the low-rider appearance he had pictured for it.


According to the owner, the paddle shifters work to provide him some extra stopping power through the way of engine braking, as he had at first developed this cars and truck as a road rally racer. He later went back on those strategies after having a child, but he decided to keep the paddle shifters anyways.

Getting on for 70 years, the Chevrolet Bel Air remains among the most exceptional executions of pure automobile design.
